  1. High - This quote relates to Gandhi's life because his actions such as fasting and leading marches spoke louder in India's fight for independence than violence. Itis because of his actions that he is remembered. His actions were etched from his beliefs and ultimately influenced the words he spoke. This can relate to my life because it means that I will be judged based on my choices and actions. I can be remembered millions of different ways, but ulimately I choose how I am remembered.

  2. I like what Micky said. I agree that actions speak louder than words and your actions, words, and beliefs are all combined. Making a choice what what you are fighting for is only part of the battle. The second part is choosing how you are going to fight for it. This choice is what made Gandhi is unforgettable and effective.

  3. My life is my message makes me think of two other quotes. First - Do as I say, not as I do. The second - Practice what you preach. Everything Gandhi said or taught, he lived. He set the example. So, he did practice what he preached On the other hand, there are people who say one thing, yet don't live what they teach.

  4. Micky and Rachel,

What great insights! I really appreciate how you connected Gandhi's message to your own lives. Now, take it a step further and think of SPECIFIC EXAMPLES from your lives-

When did you have to fight for something you believed in?

What choices have you made to make sure you are remembered as a good person?

Keep posting. I am so impressed with your responses!

  5. Brandt,

Another good insight. I love how you pointed out that Gandhi did practice what he preached while others say one thing and do another. Do you think Gandhi would be proud of our world today? Why or why not?

  6. I think this quote means that you don't have to give examples of what your life message is but just by living it should show it. This quote makes me think of another quote: "Be the change you want to see in the world." I think these two quotes resemble each other by if your life is your message then your a part of what change you want to see.

It means life doesn't always go your way so if you do good and care for others you just might change the world through the eyes of the people you have helped. so the world and your life is changing from that day on,the world and your life is giving you a message that you have done good and that is all you need. -Kitri Lucas

and done by unarmed nations in the face of odds.

Democracy and violence can ill go together.
Evolution of democracy is not possible if we are not prepared to hear the other side.

A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave.

Hatred ever kills, love never dies; such is the vast difference between the two.
What is obtained by love is retained for all time. What is obtained by hatred proves
a burden in reality for it increases hatred.

Non-cooperation with evil is a sacred duty.

Nonviolence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind.
It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man

  15. "Like the bee gathering honey from the different flowers, the wise person
accepts the essence of the different scriptures and sees only the good in all religions."

Hate the sin and not the sinner is a precept which though easy enough to
understand is rarely practiced, and that is why the poison of hatred
    spreads in the world.

Nonviolence and cowardice are contradictory terms. Nonviolence is the
greatest virtue, cowardice the greatest vice. Nonviolence springs from
love, cowardice from hate. Nonviolence always suffers, cowardice would
always inflict suffering. Perfect nonviolence is the highest bravery.
Nonviolent conduct is never demoralizing, cowardice always is.

Destruction is not the law of humans. Man lives freely only by his
readiness to die, if need be, at the hands of his brother, never by killing him.
Every murder or other injury, no matter for what cause, committed or inflicted on
another is a crime against humanity.

Man's nature is not essentially evil. Brute nature has been known to yield
to the influence of love. You must never despair of human nature.

It is the law of love that rules mankind. Had violence, i.e. hate, ruled us
we should have become extinct long ago. And yet, the tragedy of it is that
the so-called civilized men and nations conduct themselves as if the basis
    of society was violence.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the
other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more
effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment.

Whether humanity will consciously follow the law of love, I do not know.
But that need not disturb me. The law will work just as the law of
gravitation works, whether we accept it or not. The person who discovered
the law of love was a far greater scientist than any of our modern
scientists. Only our explorations have not gone far enough and
so it is not possible for everyone to see all its workings.

It is good to see ourselves as others see us. Try as we may, we are never
able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us.
This we can do only if we are not angry with our critics but will take in good
heart whatever they might have to say.

Gandhi was once asked what he thought about western civilization. His
response was: "I think it would be a good idea."

  16. You must be the change you wish to see in the world.

It may be long before the law of love will be recognized
in international affairs. The machinery's of government
stand between and hide the hearts of one people
    from those of another.

To forgive is not to forget. The merit lies in loving in spite of the vivid
knowledge that the one that must be loved is not a friend.

You assist an evil system most effectively by obeying its orders and decrees.
An evil system never deserves such allegiance.
Allegiance to it means partaking of the evil.
A good person will resist an evil system with his or her whole soul.

Nonviolence is not a garment to be put on and off at will.
Its seat is in the heart, and it must be an inseparable part of our being.

Violent means will give violent freedom.

However much I may sympathize with and admire worthy motives, I am an
uncompromising opponent of violent methods even to serve the noblest of
    causes.

What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless,
whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism
or the holy name of liberty and democracy?

Man and his deed are two distinct things. Whereas a good deed should call
forth approbation, and a wicked deed disapprobation, the doer of the deed,
whether good or wicked always deserves respect or pity as the case may be.

"You can chain me, you can torture me, you can even destroy this body, but you will never imprison my mind.”

I think this quote really symbolizes what Ghandi was about. I interpret it as saying that no matter what you do to him physically, his mind will still be free to think whatever he wants to. He can get his beliefs out through his words no matter what harm is done to him through violence.

    "My life is my message"

I think this means that he led by example. People in India still praise this man and use him as a role model for their lives. When a whole country respects one man that much, then there must have been some message given by him. Everything he did in his life brought a message that more people should recognize. Ghandi had a great message.

How does this quote relate to Gandhi's life? How can it relate to yours?

This quote relates to Gandhi because he sacrificed everything he had to make a point. Gandhi took his life into his own hands, and literally made it a message. He used to starve himself as protest to end discrimination. He fought for Indian Independence, women’s rights, religious freedom, easing poverty, and high taxes. He also fought mainly for the “untouchables”, which are South Asians which are at the bottom of the Indian cast system. He was a peaceful man, and would risk his life to send out a message. In South Africa, he was discriminated and treated the same way Americans used to treat African Americans during the Apartheid. He was beaten and banned out of hotels and trains. He took a lot of beatings in his life time, and sacrificed a lot, just to make a point. In the end, he made his point, and inspired millions of righteous movements all over the world.

What does this quote mean to you?

Ghandi's quote,"My life is my message" means to me, that what i do with mylife is mymessage to the entire world. To be more specific it means how your treat others is how you will be remembered. The world isgoing to judge you on how you affected it. Did you make it better or worse? Was it better when you came in or better when you left? Are all questions you have to ask yourself. It means actions speak louder than words. It states that you can't just talk the talk but you have to walk the walk. This i believe is one of the greatest quotes of all time, and Ghandi is one of the best leaders to ever step foot on this earth.

This quote spoken by Guandi is what I try and live by everyday. Your life is permanant so your actions cant be taken back. Whatever you are depositing into the world is what people recieve as 'you'. Guandi had a policy. Dont solve your problems with violence. Even when times were tough, he never laid a hand on a single living being. Now he a legend who many people look up to for peace. His life made his policy come true. What you want in this world is shown through how you live your life.

What does this quote mean to you?
“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.”

To me, this quote sums up part of my beliefs. I am a Christian, and this was a big philosophy of Jesus: forgiveness. I find Gandhi's ideals to be astounding. It makes me feel better about the human race when I hear about someone like Gandhi, someone who became a truly great man due to his unique, amazing beliefs. I agree with this quote and will try not to poke any eyes out from now on.

What does this quote mean to you?
    "My life is my message."

Gandhi's entire life was spent working for what he believed in. He was not immune to the pain and suffering, but he knew that as he lived his life for his cause. He didn't only share his beliefs with the world, he led by example. His legacy is based on his actions, not his words. I will try to live like this quote more, as sometimes my judgment is clouded by the actions of other people. Focusing on me, and being the best I can be, will be my new outlook on life. That's the way Gandhi would have wanted it.

    To me,
